Wacky Races – Main Season Points race 2 and other stories...
Ref. 10th May 2017 | Wacky Races is a regular column and light-hearted report written by Will Dallimore (RBYC) on the Royal Burnham One Design fleet racing and shenanigans on the river Crouch in Essex (UK).
We now have 10 boats afloat as the fleet grows week to week. A big welcome to BLUBELL back in the water under new ownership - we look forward to seeing Keith, Shirley and Jo on the start line next weekend. It was also great see GANNET very ably helmed by Tye and expertly crewed by young Vinnie Lower (5yrs) who had things so well under control that he was able to take a nap half way round the course.
A sensible choice of course sent the fleet up the river after a short fetch to No 3. WHITE ROSE, AMANDA and RED JACKET led the charge but the fickle winds off Creeksea bunched up the fleet. AMANDA eased through WR on the approach to Cliff and it looked like it was all over for the Rosettes. MANDARIN carried out a lengthy trawling operation rounding Bridgemarsh and a fish supper was secured in the orange spinnaker. Drama is never far away and, unfortunately for AMANDA, they went hard aground off Black Point allowing WHITE ROSE (1) and RED JACKET (2) through.
TRIVIA question - has the RBOD fleet ever finished a race with the sail numbers in consecutive order? Answers on a postcard.....
We look forward to the imminent return of BERYL and were surprised and impressed that the 2017 burgundy team kit was recently launched by no less than Elle Macpherson (see photo). In a statement issued through her Agent Elle said "It is a real honour to launch the 2017 BERYL team kit which will be very cool and practical when sailing on the Costa del Crouch. Simon has told me so much about his superyacht - I can't wait to get on board".
