Cruising on Moonbeam IV in Cannes

Moonbeam IV's Captain Mikael Creach gives Classic Yacht TV an interview about life onboard, his philosphy as Captain and some history on this 101 year old classic yacht. This video shows Moonbeam IV sailing from Cannes to St-Tropez in 2014 in the feeder race that send yachts who've participated in the Régates Royales-Trophée Panerai round to Saint Tropez to race in the Rolex sponsored Les Voiles de Saint Tropez. Seen here, Moonbeam is gliding along in light winds with a parasol up to shelter the helmsman from the riviera sun – a sight that gives us a glimpse into her past.

- You have been captain of Moonbean IV for 8, nearly 9 years this season. What is you most memorable sail? // Vous avez été capitaine de Moonbean IV pendant 8 presque 9 ans cette saison . Quel est votre souvenir le plus mémorable à bord ?

Exactly I've been the captain of Moonbeam IV for 8 years long now and I start my 9th year still with the same energy. It is an incredible story that I have had the same owner all of these years. Of course I have many fantastic memories. And some of them will stay in my memory of sailor for ever. The incredible duels with Mariquita during the races.... The match racing in 2009 in Antibes bay against Moonbeam III with 34 knots of wind ! You know sailing aboard Moonbeam IV is a permanent adventure... That is magic !

Exactement, je commande Moonbeam 4 depuis maintenant 8 ans, et je commence cette année la 9eme année avec toujours la meme énergie. C'est une histoire incroyable que je vis avec le meme propriétaire depuis toutes ces années. Evidemment j'ai énormement de fantastiques souvenirs à bord. Mais il est vrai que certains resteront à jamais gravé dans ma mémoire de marin... les duels incroyables avec Mariquita durant les régates... le match racing en 2009 à Antibes contre Moonbeam 3 avec 34 noeuds de vent !!! vous savez, naviguer à bord de Moonbeam 4 est une aventure en permanence.... c'est magique.

- What was your back ground in sailing before you came on board this boat? // Quel a été votre parcours dans la voile avant de venir à bord de ce bateau?

I have worked on boats for nearly 25 years now. I was 21 when I first started to work as a sailor on a 24 meters classic, Eugénia 5. I quickly understood that I had found my way and I have never stopped to walk on a teak deck since! I have commanded a few sailing yachts; 'Halloween' for 2 years, 'Moonbeam III' for 1 year, 'Hygie' for 6 years, 'Pionneer' for 5 years and 'Windjammer' for 2 years. Lots of navigation in the Caribbean, 2 years in the Red Sea and more than 20 years in Mediterranean. That was a long and fierce journey of work, that has brought me to Moonbeam IV... and to be ready for it !! I've achieved it and I'm very proud of it.

Je fais ce métier depuis presque 25 ans à présent. J'avais 21 ans quand j'ai commencé a travailler comme marin sur un classique de 24 mètres, "Eugénia 5". J'ai très vite compris que j'avais trouvé ma voix.. et je n'ai jamais cessé de marcher sur un pont en tect depuis ! j'ai commandé plusieurs unités, Halloween 2 ans, Moonbeam 3 pendant 1 an, Hygie durant 6 ans, l'es.Pionneer pendant 5 ans et Windjammer pendant 2 ans. Beaucoup de navigation dans les Caraibes, 2 ans en mer rouge et plus de20 ans en Méditerranée. C'ètait une longue route de travail et d'acharnement, de combativité, pour arriver jusqu'a Moonbeam 4.... pour etre pret !!! aujourd'hui, c'est chose faite, et j'en suis très fier.

- Where is your favourite cruising ground and racing or regatta location? // Où se situe votre croisière préférée ou votre régate préférée ?

I'm in love with the Caribbean... Antigua English Harbour, Dominic Island, Los Roques... But also the Red Sea takes up a very big part in my heart. In the Mediterranean, there are some really fairytale-like places, it is difficult to choose !!! My favourite race... There isn't really! The important thing is when the best competitors are involved too!

Je suis amoureux des Caraibes.. Antigua English harbour, la dominique, los Roques..... mais la mer rouge prend une très grande place dans mn coeur. En Mediterranée il y a vraiment des endoits féériques, c'est dur de devoir choisir !!! Ma régate préférée , il n'y en pas vraiment ! l'important.... c'est quand les meilleurs concurrents y sont égalements !!!

- Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier spent their honeymoon on board Moonbeam IV, where did they cruise, do you know? // Grace Kelly et le Prince Rainier ont passé leur lune de miel à bord de Moonbeam IV , savez-vous où ont ils navigué ?

The story of the Prince [Rainier] and Grace Kelly aboard stays in the dark, it is very vague. The Prince was more a landlubber than a sailor. We think the honey moon was aboard and that the yacht was in Monaco Harbour... we don't know a lot. I would love to have some photos of their life aboard. There is a beautiful one aboard, where the Prince is at the helm.

l'histoire du Prince et de Grace Kelly à bord reste assez flou. Le prince était plus un terrien qu'un marin. A part la lune de miel passée à bord et le fait que le bateau était amarré à Monaco... on ne sait pas grand chose. j'aimerais avoir des photos de leur vie a bord. j'en ai une très belle du Prince à la barre, elle est dans Moonbeam 4.


- Moonbeam IV comes alongside in French and Italian Riviera ports with such a reference to her Scottish history. Do you reference historical documents to find out how the captains would have run the crew and the boat in the early 20th Century? // Moonbeam IV fréquente les ports de la Riviera française et italienne avec des références à son histoire écossaise . Avez- vous regroupé des documents historiques pour savoir comment les premiers capitaines commandaient l'équipage et le voilier ?

The story of Moonbeam IV before she sails for races is quite clear. When that kind of yacht stopped to race, their life would have changed !! Two or three owners bought Moonbeam IV. One of them did some charters in Greece. That was when the 'Murray' family bought Moonbeam IV. At the end of 1990, Moonbeam's existence started to change. In fact they were the first to put back Moonbeam as she was originally. And so did the present owner in context of racing and that has been her aim for the last 8 years.

Coming back into the past time, the traditional navigation, the sailor spirit in music and some real sporting naval battles... I'm not only a captain of a Classic ... I think I'm a man who wants to give to the future generation this kind of mind. I want these traditions to carry on, because there are very good. These traditions tell us the history of the sailors, the maritime values, the big challenges.

L'histoire de Moonbeam 4 jusqu'a ce qu'elle navigue en course est assez claire. Quand ce genre de bateau ont arreté de courrir, leur vie a été bousculé !!! 2 ou 3 propriétaires ont acquis Moonbeam 4 par la suite. L'un d'eux a meme fait du charter en Grèce. c'est quand la famille Murray a acheté Moonbeam 4 , fin 1990, que la vie du bateau a commencé a changé. En effet ils ont été les premiers a remettre Moonbeam 4 dans sa configuration d'origine. Puis le propriétaire actuel a également redonné le souffle, pour que Moonbeam 4 redevienne la bete de course qu'elle était.... et qu'elle est depuis maintenat 8 ans. Un retour dans le passé.... la navigation a l'ancienne... l'esprit marin en musique... de vraies batailles navals sportives... je suis pas que un capitaine de bateau classique.... je pense etre un passeur. Je me bats pour que ces traditions perdurent. Parce qu'elles en vallent la peine... Elle nous racontent l'histoire des marins d'antan, les valeurs maritimes, les grands défis.
